PBC Macedonian Radio and Television

PBC Macedonian Radio and Television

The Public Broadcasting Company Macedonian radio and television is the national broadcasting service of the Republic of North Macedonia. It is composed of two production units: television and radio.

In its current form, MRT has existed since 1993, when it was founded by the Parliament. Until then, it functioned as a continuation of Television Skopje, which was in operation from 1964, and Radio Skopje, founded in 1944.

The national broadcaster performs work of public interest and broadcasts programs with informative, scientific-educational, cultural, sports and other kinds of content. MRT runs 8 Television services: MRT1, MRT2, MRT3, MRT4, MRT5, Parliament Channel, MRT 1 SAT, MRT 2 SAT, as well as 4 Radio services: MR1, MR2, MR3 and MR SAT. The channels themselves are divided according to the language in which they broadcast the program: Macedonian, Albanian and the languages of the other minority communities (Turkish, Serbian, Roma, Vlach and Bosnian languages). One of the television programs broadcasts content for children 24 hours a day. Another, the Parliament Channel, broadcasts sessions of the Parliament live, which is the founder of MRT. Each program service has a responsible editor.

The MRT is managed by a general director, who is elected by the program council, which in turn is elected by the Parliament. The current director was elected 11 years ago and is still in charge even though his mandate expired three years ago, because of a blockade in the Parliament for the election of the body that should appoint a new director.

All of this complicates the reforms that need to be made at the public broadcaster, which has been criticized in the European Commission's annual reports on the country's progress. They note that the state has been providing insufficient funds for the work of the public service for years, which affects both the quality of its work and its independence.

MRT should have an independent editorial policy, but the practice shows the opposite. Its work is strongly influenced by the party during which its leadership was elected.

Until 2017, MRT was financed through the broadcasting fee and from the state budget. Then the government abolished the fee, so now the main source of funding is the state budget, together with the sale of advertising time.

MRT is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
