Kanal 5

"Kanal 5" television was established in 1998 under the name "TV BS", as a daughter company of the graphic company "Pechatnica BS" (‘printing house’ in Macedonian). The owner of the printing house, and thus the founder of the television, is Borislav Stojmenov. The ownership structure of "Kanal 5" has changed several times throughout its 25-year history, with the entry and exit of various business partners, but the Stojmenov family has almost always been a part of it, with the exception of the period between 2012 and 2015, when Vanja Gavrilovski, a long-time employee in the companies of the Stojmenov family, was the formal owner. Today the company is wholly owned by Emil Stojmenov, the son of the television’s founder Borislav Stojmenov.

In the first six years of its existence, "Kanal 5" broadcasted programs only in the area of the City of Skopje before receiving a national concession. Today, according to research by the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services (AVMU) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), it is the second most watched television in the country, right after Sitel.

During the ruling of the center-right VMRO-DPMNE party (2006-2017), when major violations of democratic standards and media freedoms were registered in the country, "Kanal 5" television was considered to be a part of the ruling party's propaganda machinery that strongly favored policies of the government and attacked the opposition in its informative and debate programs. After the change of government, the director Ivan Mirchevski apologized for such an editorial policy. Since, "Kanal 5" has no openly favorable stance towards any political party.
